The newest tiny car from Maruti is named after a kind of coffee that most people in India aren't accustomed to. Espressos are typically tiny, bitter, and difficult to drink. Thankfully, we don't need to get acclimated to driving a Maruti Suzuki. Additionally, this formula isn't particularly original. Renault has done it before with the Kwid, and it was a success. Additionally, Maruti wants to capitalize on our shared affection for automobiles with raised ride heights and our loathing for the lunar surfaces that the government insists on calling roads. Here it is: the S-Presso.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso Exterior -

The S-Presso, according to Maruti Suzuki, is a small SUV. We don't totally concur with that line of reasoning. Yes, it does have a tall-boy-like stance and an impressive 180mm of ground clearance. Without a doubt, however, this looks less like a diminutive Brezza and more like a hopped-up Alto.

However, there is an attempt to link the Brezza to the puzzle. The headlights, toothy grille, and that sizable bumper, when seen from the front, resemble those of a compact SUV somewhat. Its large, flat bonnet and sharply slanted A-pillar are two further design signals that suggest it may have some SUV origins. The S-Presso seems tall and slender when viewed directly. Sadly, there is no spunk here either. Nothing that would immediately impress you. It doesn't help that a necessary item like a foglamp has been overlooked, and that the daytime running light is an add-on.

Even on the top-spec model, the absence of alloy wheels is immediately apparent from the side. You do start to wonder about some of Maruti's design choices when you notice that the little indicator on the front fender is a direct copy of a twenty-year-old Zen. Maruti should have provided some lower body covering to help break up the monotony of solid colour because the S-Presso has XL-sized doors.

The rather plain back end isn't particularly noteworthy. Perhaps Maruti Suzuki should have decided to add some LED elements to the tail lamps to make this spot more lively. This dull back would have benefited from anything as simple as spreading out the S-Presso badging over the centre of the boot.

It's likely that you'd want to add some accessories to your S-Presso to make it stand out a little. The price of Rs 10,000 for daytime running lamps, side and wheel arch cladding, and alloy wheels seems outrageous. If you check every box, the total cost will be close to Rs 40,000. The tiny Suzuki does appear much more tempting with these additions.

The S-Presso is significantly larger than the Alto in all relevant dimensions. Additionally, it is the tallest vehicle in its class, outpacing the Kwid by a massive 74mm. The Kwid, however, has the advantage in every other area.

 S-Presso Interior -

The S-doors Presso's open widely, allowing you to enter the cabin with ease. This is more simpler than the Alto and Kwid where you have to lower yourself into the vehicle. The small dashboard, the peculiar circular feature in the center, and the speedometer situated in the middle all command immediate attention. The center console and side AC vent bezels on our orange test car were harmonized in color. You can choose any other exterior color and the finish will be silver. For a car this tiny, the quality levels here appear decent. It is one notch higher than the Alto and one notch lower than the WagonR.

Maruti chose to have really plush seat cushions. Additionally, if you're going for a quick sprint through the city, this is comfortable. But if you had to sit in these seats for more than an hour or two, you might wish they were a little firmer. In connection with that, the chairs might have used more bolstering and feel narrower. Additionally, there are no adjustable headrests, although the integrated device provides adequate neck and head support.

It provides adequate front storage areas as well. A compact glovebox, a convenient shelf for your phone and wallet, and 1-liter bottle holders are all there. Two cup holders and a small cubby for trinkets are included on the floor console. You shouldn't have any issues with the front storage area, unless the cubby feels a little tight for large-screen phones. Unfortunately, we cannot say anything regarding the back. There is nothing but a small rectangular cubby on the floor (behind the handbrake). No seatback pockets, not even any door pockets.

After briefly glossing over that, you will encounter surprise number two. Knee space! Comparing the S-Presso to the Alto and the Kwid, there is a significant improvement. In fact, the S-Presso manages to outperform the Ignis, which is a larger car with a longer wheelbase, when the data are compared. Even people who are a little taller than six feet can comfortably stand up here. The built-in headrests are likely to be a hassle. For someone between 5'8" and 5'10," it hardly supports the base of the neck." If you're even taller, there isn't much support left for you.

Expecting a car this small to accommodate five passengers is a bit unreasonable. It goes without saying that riding three abreast in the back is quite crowded and not advised. It is a cosy four-seater that, when used as one, gives plenty of room for everyone. Additionally, the 270-liter trunk is more than eager to accommodate bags. With room to spare, we easily fit two backpacks, two overnighters, and one more backpack.

 S-Presso Safety -

All models of Maruti's "micro-SUV" come standard with a driver airbag, ABS with EBD, and reverse parking sensors. Notably, a passenger airbag is standard only in the highest-specified VXi+ model and is an additional Rs 6,000 for all other variants. We strongly advise against purchasing any variation without a passenger airbag.

 S-Presso Performance -

An impartial organisation like the NCAP has not yet conducted a crash test on the S-Presso. It complies with the crash test standards established for India, nonetheless.

You get the tried-and-true 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine found in the Alto K10 and the WagonR with the S-Presso. The motor is now BS6 compliant, but its 68PS and 90Nm power outputs are unchanged. Once the engine is running, the recognisable 3-cylinder note may be heard. However, vibrations are rather well controlled. It wouldn't be a problem unless you were moving at a very slow speed in a high gear.

Thankfully, the tighter emission regulations have not significantly reduced this engine's performance. It's the same vivacious, thrummy engine that enjoys being cranked. Within the city, things move rather easily. The engine wouldn't complain if you literally stayed in second or third gear the entire commute. It works very well pulling up to speed in the same gear while crawling over speed bumps in second. Darting in and out of traffic gaps is also made stress-free by doing this. The controls, which are typical of a little Maruti, are incredibly light and take no effort, which simplifies the driving experience.

This engine is comfortable travelling between 80 and 100 kmph on the highway. But it's not a good idea to pass quickly moving traffic in fifth. To acquire the necessary acceleration, you must downshift. However, if you are travelling in third or fourth and cruising at 60 to 70 kph, you can just press the pedal to move forward.

Of course, you can choose the AMT and let the vehicle handle gear changes. Before you go out for a test drive, remember that it's a commuter and to keep your expectations in check. The AMT performs as expected and completes the task at hand. The majority of the time, upshifts are smooth, but downshifts are noticeable.

 S-Presso Variants -

There are four options available: Standard, LXi, VXi, and VXi+. All other trims receive a (O) sub version that adds a passenger airbag and front seatbelts with pretensioners and force limiters, with the exception of the highest-specified VXi+ trim. Since the standard edition lacks basic amenities like power steering, air conditioning, and a power outlet, it should not be taken into consideration.

If you have a really limited budget, you might want to select the mid-spec LXi (O) model. This merely upgrades the basic standard variant's power steering and air conditioning. We would advise stretching for the VXi+ instead than the VXi (O). That's because adding internal adjustable rearview mirrors, a touchscreen infotainment system, and steering-mounted audio controls won't cost you much more.
